Katie 's tapestry

One of the treasures at St Laurence’s is the Four Seasons tapestry in Our Lady’s Chapel. It was finished in 1991 by Katie Pitt after three years of painstaking (literally) work as Katie had dedicated the tapestry to her mother, Mary, who had died aged 97.

To do something artistic would, she felt, help her through her grief. She said that working the tapestry was therapeutic and added, ‘It also helps to talk about the loss of someone you have loved.’

The tapestry was done from a chart, from which stitches are counted, not from a transfer. Each of the six sections, the four seasons with two additional panels of herbs and vegetables, was made separately and sewn together, followed by the ribbon-border around the edge. The completed work was sent to Wales for stretching, before it was finally hung in front of Our Lady’s Altar.
