Ministry of the Word
Reading in church is about proclaiming God’s Holy Word; more is required than simply reading a text aloud. The Reader is a channel for communication of the inspired Word of God in the Scriptures to the whole assembly.

Duties
Preparation. Readers should prepare themselves as far in advance as possible, reading the text, studying it and reflecting and praying on it as well as reading it aloud a number of times.
The quarterly rota, which says who is reading when (at St Laurence), is available a month in advance and notes appear in the newsletter to let readers know when readings are available. All readers have a list which gives details of how to contact the other readers and if they are unable to read on a particular date they are asked to make a ‘swap’ and record this on the rota at the back of the church.

At St Agnes the organiser produces a quarterly Rota which is then distributed to individual readers. On the actual day of the reading, Readers should arrive well in advance and check that the correct readings are on the lectern. At St Agnes one Reader delivers all the readings and the Prayers of Intercession.
At St Laurence the first Reader needs to check if the Psalm is being sung (10.45 Mass only). The second Reader delivers the Prayers of Intercession.
